
I think Spike has his own views and outlook about what he wants to see in a film, and what I pulled from him is of being sure of what I want to say in my films- finding my own voice. That was really what really bonded us in a great way. Telling our own stories about our cultures from our perspective. What our people have gone through over the years, with genocide and slavery, is a common theme and similarity we have in terms of what we try to tackle in films. It was really important to him because he wanted to bring that representation and uplift people of color. I actually just shot that short film a few months before the pandemic hit, so during the start of the pandemic, I had all this free time to edit because there wasn’t much to do. So I was still working when we could, safely, and that also showed just Tribeca recently, this past year so that was cool.Īlso, I got into the Sundance Indigenous Labs back in 2019, and they funded me to make a short film.
